Karoo Tours closed corporation, established in 2004, is the owner/guide operation of Douwe Temple Vlok.

“Born (in 1969) and growing up in Beaufort West, the oasis of the great Karoo, allowed me to experience the wonders of the Karoo from an early age. Most weekends and holidays were spent on our family farm, exploring and learning the treasures of the veld. This privilege of being in nature sealed my love for this arid area.

“I always enjoyed travelling and from 1994 to 1996 I worked and travelled in the USA. From there I travelled to South America, where I stayed in Paraguay for about five years. For three of those years I managed a cattle ranch in the Conception district. Living on the banks of the Paraguay river surrounded by pristine woods and an abundance of wildlife, I learned to speak Spanish from the gauchos (cowboys). Every year I returned to South Africa to visit family, friends and, of course, my beloved Karoo.

“I enjoyed showing friends nature’s ways and decided to become a field guide. To gain experience, I guided for an overland company from 2000 to 2004, touring Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho and Swaziland. I also qualified as a river guide, canoeing on the Orange River (five-day trips) and the Breede River (day trips). During 2004, I guided at five-star game lodges complete with the ‘Big 5’.

“I first initiated itineraries in the Karoo in 1998. Now, in 2005, I am finally realising my dream of sharing the secrets of the Karoo with you.”
